Simple Question--"Change Oil Light" WHY?
I know how to turn off the "Change Oil" light but what causes it to turn on in the first place? I told ya this would be easy!!! :eek: :D

It cycles about every 5,000mls as a reminder to change the oil - next time you do an oil change reset it, note your mileage and see when it comes on again. It's just a reminder thing !!

GRX--- No I don't want to disable it. Ive had the Vette for 6,000 miles and one year and this is the second time it has come on. The dealer told me that it would come on after you did a WOT launch sometimes. I did not believe that :bs and thought their was no relation between a WOT launch and the Change oil light.
I dont need to be reminded to change my oil but I guess some people do. :eek:
I change with 5-W30 Mobile One and filter every 3000 miles. I know thats more often than necessesary but for $25.00 at Walmart I can sleep better knowing that its well protected.

The "Engine Oil Life Monitor" uses oil temperature and engine revolutions to decide when the oil is nearly worn out. Which is usually between 3000 to 7500 miles after the last oil change, under severe conditions the "Change Oil" light may come on before 3000 miles. The system will not detect dust in the oil, so if the vehicle has been driven under dusty conditions, the oil should be changed every 3000 miles.

Mine usually comes on before 3000 because I drive it hard. If it should not be on at 3000 I change it anyway. Usually the only reason it doesn't come on at 3000 is that I've had the battery unhooked for some reason.

The system as i understand it counts crankshaft revolutions. Not milage.

Well coincidentally that light came on today in my Dad's car. Never saw it come on before. This oil probably has less than 1000 miles on it but most of it at the drag strip.

The light will come on prematurely if it is not reset after every oil change, check your owner's manual for reset instructions. Hope this helps,Sean :)
