Default Vortech MSD Question

I am rebuilding a 92' Coupe with LT-1 and the Vortech Kit. The car was puchased in a basket so to speak and found the engine had two melted pistons. Anyway, I am carefully reviewing every part of the previous owners install.

The kit from Vortech includes the MSD Ingintion Box, Coil and a Potentiometer. The coil will go back on, but I'm trying to decide the real function of the MSD Box and Potentiometer. I gather it's to adjust the timing while driving or other conditional changes.

Why would I care if I have the car dyno tested and tuned the way I want it? I know the kit was to be installed on a stock LT-1, but if the car is dialed with a custom burned Prom then I should be able to delete all of this stuff correct?

I'm new to this and am probably missing something here, but don't know what it is. Your input is helpful. Thanks.

I kept mine in case I were to get a load of bad gas somewhere, I can just turn the dial to help protect engine until I get home. Easier than breaking out the laptop and correcting it. And since it sounds like you still are using the factory computer, laptop correction is out of the question.

Thanks. That is something to consider especially because I plan on taking some long trips. I will have the Ease Reader to change the programming myself once she's up and running.

So what I'm hearing is the only purpose is to have the option to back off the timing.
