I have a 85 vette with a tpi that starts right up can drive it across country with no trouble at all. but sometimes it starts to idles really low and die while sitting at a light or stop sign. does anyone have any idea what it could be?
Recall or Campaign on this issue back in '85 - you might take a look at that first - I don't have a copy, but I thought it was MAF issue and an increase in Minimum Idle Speed (reset to 450 rpms). As always, if you can capture data with scanning equipment when the problem occurs, diagnostics is a lot easier. Seriously doubt it's vacuum or fuel related - though issues are rarely intermittent.
Ok - I looked in my Corvette Specs Book and the Recall was on VIN's F5100001 to F5101340 - intermittent stalling due to deterioation of the MAF which led to a low air flow signal. New MAF's were to be installed on these cars - so I'd check your VIN and a scan would pick this up. The Bulletin - for all of the '85's - reset the Minimum Idle Speed to 500 rpms. IAC was relearning itself to the 0 or a no counts position so it would intermittently idle at 400 rpms and stall. You might make sure that yours is set to 500 rpms - tech tips should have the procedure. There was also a recall on the coil for certain VINS - they'd lose power with heat, but that was more of a hesitation, miss issue per my summary.
