My '84 runs between 196 and 210 degrees. I'm concerned this is to high. When stopped in traffic, it appears as if it may boil over. I wish to replace the stat with the 160 that I have read about in the CF threads. My question: Other than the stat and gasket, is there anything else that needs to be done to the computer or fan limitation settings?

Re: I think my '84 needs a stat? Help please... (blk_c4)
Those temps are normal for your 84. Heck, the fan doesn't come on until the temp reaches 238 then doesn't turn off again until it comes back down to 201.

It will run cooler...but it will run like crap. Your car needs a little warmth to keep her happy. Just make sure your fan is working, your antifreeze is clean and you have no leaks. You should be fine.

i ran a 160 stat in my car during the summer..it will only run cooler on the highway, you'll need to change the fan switch to have the fans kick on earlier too keep it cool in the city. the stock fans come on at 220 and kick off at 200 (for an 84) this is fine and nothing to worry about. Its winter now and i like my heater so ive put the stock 195 stat back in.

Makes sense. I'll keep my eyes glued on the temperature gauge to to be sure.
As for the heater, this baby sees no snow anyway. It's hibernating till spring. I am planning some mods for the spring and thought this idea would help.

you may want to do what i did yesterday. i removed the the radiator cover and a/c condesor, and man you talk about trashy, the area between the cond. and raditor. it was filled with leaves and a plastic bag. i sprayed through the radiator with a water hose to flush it out good. put it all back together, filled it with some fresh anti-freeze, (dex-cool), then started it up and let it run for a while, then went for a drive. my temp never got above 212. that was highway driving @ 55mph for about 25 miles. before i did this my car would run around 235-240, under the same conditions.
