I thought about carbing it, but from the early looks of it, my car wouldn't pass emissions after throwing a carb on it...

However I'm more than likely wrong

You'll need to go a bit further than TPI, a good aftermarket mini-ram or similar concept with cam/heads will go far. Carb would be easy and if ya add free flow cats, emissions would be ok, I just don't know if they do an extensive visual ck there.

I plan on replacing the cam, heads and redoing the entire exhaust system after putting in some sort of fuel injection... further than that, I'm not sure.

A stock TPI isn't gonna oput you out in front of an Audi TT or a WRX without a LOT of money and mods to it.

If you are going to do all that you might be better off to sell the '84 and buy a LT car. Or, look at dropping in a LT crate motor. You would still have the issue of needing a wiring harness and computer. It sounds like you aren't happy with performance levels. Replacing all those parts in your engine could be done, but will cost you big dollars. Look here for some ideas.

Since this reason is totally subjective; you simply "like TPI", then I can't comment too much. What I CAN say is that the CFI system is simpler, has less parts, and is, in fact EASIER to work on than a TPI system. The CFI system is also much cheaper to work on, too, parts wise.

Too beat the cars listed, you need about 250 Crank hp, which is a piece of cake w/CFI. Lets look at you're performance "target": I don't think Audi made a TT with Twin turbos; you can either get a TT w/a 1.8 T (single turbo) that is 180 hp, or you can get the 3.2 V6 that is N/A and 220 hp. The fastest car in your target list is the WRX w/227 hp. Both cars listed are AWD and weigh around 3400-3500lbs. 250 hp in a 'Vette would spank those cars every time. I can't comment on "some BMW's"

You can match or beat all the cars you listed with CFI or TPI...with nothing more than a cam, and exhaust, and requisite tuning. In fact, I know for a fact that you can achieve 250+ hp with out a cam, in a CFI car. A hand ported intake, "free tricks" and minor tuning will get you there easily, and for basically zero dollars. With a TPI, you're going to have to pay for the TPI, harness, ECM, and install, just to be at the same place you'd get to w/a hand ported CFI intake.

I made ABOUT 230 hp through a stock NON ported CFI intake in my '83 Trans Am not long after I bought it. Keep in mind, that was a 305, not a 350. With nothing more than exhaust, free mods, and an electric fan, that car ran 14.5's at 95 in the 1/4 which takes around 230 hp in a 3300 lb car.

How about neither?

Consider Aftermarket Port Injection System like an Edelbrock Victor Junior EFI manifold /fuel rails/throttle body or Accel single plane EFI manifold, upgraded fuel pump and an ECU that can drive those injectors such as Megasquirt or EBL?

If you wish to swap out the TBI I cant see going to a stock TPI personally. Somewhat equal in performance.

Swapping to a TPI, besides eating up time and money, will accomplish your main goal. It will get rid of the TBI. Other than satify your desire to get rid of the throttle body injectors, you will gain nothing else. It would appear that you bought the wrong car.

RACE ON!!!

With a TPI harness, and computer you can go to a superram or a miniram. With the right cam and heads you can be low 12's high 11's and ad nitrous in the high 10's.

Superram is good for ripping around town, but if you go to a miniram on the drag strip it will just rip.

This is what you need to get started. Choose an injection that will work with your cam and heads and go for it. Set some goals and then choose the parts.
