Default Auto Transmission 3/4 Clutch Pack Question

I have a 1996 coupe where I am rebuilding the transmission myself. I notice that some rebuild kits have the alto Red 9 pack clutch and steels, while others have an 8 pack clutch and steel.

My question is, which is better for high horsepower applications (planning a 402 stroker next year)......the 8 pack or 9 pack????

Who has the best price quality master rebuild kits? thanks in advance!

The 9 pack kit is a 1 size fits all kit 4or every 700r4, 4l60, 4l60e,4l65e>
The frictions and steels vary depending on the input drum.
Use a raybestos z pack for the 3-4 pack

The red friction pack is different from the blue, or tan pack as well. Be sure to look closely at this. Also some have kolene steels, and some do not. What this as well.

I use the 8 blue frictions and koelene steels for the 3-4 clutch with a selective backing plate. I get my stuff from Transtar out of Cleveland. Are you putting in the Beast reaction shell? Trans-Go kit?

Default Hi

Yes, I am putting in a Beast sunshell. I guess I should replace the reverse shell too because they get concave. . . .apparently. What make are the blues. The Raybestos Z Pack that Pete K suggested seem to get rave reviews everywhere. . . and they are only twenty bucks more generally...

How long did it take you to remove your tranny from the car?

Sadly,
I can do it in about 45 minutes.
The z-pack requires a later gm apply ring. The instructions in the kit provide the part number. If I was not sitting at o'Hare airport, I would look up the part number.

Pete, you sound like me. . . . .I always have the CF window open while I'm doing work too. I'm quite addicted to the site. Perhaps they should have a 12 step program for addicted CF members.....

Ummm, I'll wait till the 12th if you have the raybestos z pack and gm clip for a edcent price...

It's a good idea to replace the reverse input drum if you have a lot of miles on the transmission or if you will be using a wider 2-4 band. Transtar sells a nice reverse input drum for around $65. Get the wider bushings for the reaction sun gear and the rear of the stator support.
