Default Any good experience with a USB cable?

1995 A4. I've got one those AKM cables and a Belkin USB to serial adapter. There's cables here and cables there, the cables and adapters add another 10 lbs to my car. Besides the hit or miss datalogging when I'm in the staging lanes. I'm looking for a standalone USB cable > 16 pin DLC that is reliable. I've read the FAQ and even emailed. I use Tunercat and Datamaster. TIA

Pop for old thread, I tried a USB converter but got no love

I'd like to just buy the USB cable but the Datamaster help document states that USB is harder on Vettes for some reason (it says why but can't remember, I think because of the CCM).

on this thread.

I had Andrew at AKM switch out my existing cable to a USB style, actually my new cable has both a 12 pin and 16 pin connector.

Anyway, it's working GREAT on my 93 - in fact better than the serial cable I was using on my 96, haven't had a chance to use the new USB cable on my 96 yet.

Also - make sure you install the necessary drivers for the USB cable.

So does the driver CD have a serial port emulator on it? In your device manager does the cable still come up as a serial port?

Thanks

I can't remember how serial ports show up since I don't have any serial ports on my laptop - I think they show up as LPTX????

Anyway, the USB shows up as a COM port.

Mine shows up as a Comms port whenever cable is plugged in.It is not shown when not connected unlike a regular Comms port.Does the same for Ostrich or ALDL cable (Datamaster) ,both of which on mine are USB.
Looks like this
http://www.tbichips.com/usb.htm

"Belkin USB to serial adapter."
Most people seem to have problems with ext adapters.Mine works fine with the software serial driver
www.ftdichip.com/ supplied the drivers that came with my cable from www.aldlcable.com/sc/details.asp?item=aldlobd1u
has 16 pin as well.
