I had a couple bad injectors and instead of just replacing them, I bought a set of fms 24# injectors and afpr. Well, I put the set in and now car starts right up usually when it is cold and I have to try 2-3 times when it is hot, except when I turn it off and start it in less than 5 minutes and sometimes I can turn it off and try and start it right away and it is hard to start. I took the injectors out of the manifold and left them connected to the fuel rail and turned the key to 'ON' and looked but I could not see a fuel leak, but my fuel pressure drops pretty quick.
Could the injectors leak in a way I would not easily see?
Sounds like you need to pinch off the fuel return line and see if the pressure holds, could be a bad check valve or pulsator. I'd also check the vacumn line on the fuel pressure regulator to look for signs of gas.
I had the same problem. My 88 would sometimes start fine. If I shut it off for 20 minutes it would be hard starting. I would hold the gas to the floor and it would start right up. I figured it was leaky injectors.
I would also get some surging and an erratic idle at times.
I changed my injectors. I just installed new Trick Flow 24 lb. injectors.
I also took the fuel rail and my fuel pressure regulator apart. The fuel rail gaskets and O-rings were cracked and brittlle, so I changed them.
I put new O rings on the fuel lines.
It's like night and day. I would sometimes get a hestitation when I accelerated, that is gone. It starts like a new car. It has a smooth steady idle. It actually feels faster.
