I have had a problem with the service ASR light coming on. Now the SYS is flashing along with the SECURITY light. When i attemp to start the car, it will start and run for app. 5 seconds and cut off. It will not crank after that. If I keep trying it, it will start. I have been told this is all computer related. NAPA has one for $160.94 (rebuilt). Is there any advantage to installing a later model unit or will it work? Thanks for all your input.
You may want to check. But I think that the '92 and '93 may be the same unit as they both used batch fire fuel injection. the '94 and up used sequential port fuel injection.
There have been quite a few failures with similar symptoms as you state.
Mine would start fine. Then after driving ang getting hot, the service asr light would come on along with the SYS and security light flashing every few seconds. The car would run and drive normally in this condition. If I would turm her off she would not start. Only after 10 minutes upto 30 minutes it would start. Then I would start the whole "show" over again.
I had my ECM rebuilt and everything has been great for the last 3 months. No more light show and no more non-start issues
My rebuild was around $300.00 You may want to check the C4 scan and tune section as it seems many have had this problem
Who did your rebuild of the ECM? Mine stopped "seeing" the Right O2 Sensor, and I failed inspection as a result. Shopping for one shows plenty "available" then you find it really isn't in stock. GM Parts Direct is out, NAPA is out, etc. BBB said he really, really has it. We'll see.

I was lucky (so far,so good). I was looking all over the internet and found a place that happened to be just north of me. I went in person and had them rebuild mine.
I posted this before but I'll say it again. The ECM used in the 92-93 is the same as the one used in many Camaros, Firebirds, Impalas SS and possibly a Cadillac if equipped with LT1 engines. Since all the afore mentioned cars are prone to become rustbuckets and get crushed, you might find one of them in a junkyard. GM dealers and others keep saying they will be getting some more, but when.
The ECM's for f bodies are the same for 93, a 92 f body ECM is NOT the same and the chips are NOT even close. Vette chips are programmed for more horsepower , while f bodies are what is called de-tuned chips.
You very well may be having computer problems. I had to search high and low to find an ECM for my car. Please see the link below for info on that search and where to get one.
You might also want to ask around to see if someone has a spare you could borrow for troubleshooting. I would lend you mine but I know it has a problem that may be similiar to what you are experiencing now.
You can also try ebay (93 and I think 94 Camaro ECM's are the same part number) to get one but beware and don't pay more than $100 for a used unknown condition one unless you absoutely cannot find one anywhere else.

I guess I should have said more earlier. The service numbers on the ECM's are the same.

Reason: stand corrected.
