I have been checking everything I can get to I'm showing the timing is -5 degrees retard? I have tried tapping on the side of the block no change on timing... so I'm thinking my Knock senser needs to be replaced. Checked the ESC Module seems O.K. also I have a question where is the the fuse for CKT 339?
You checked the ESC module? In't it on the EPROM for the 1990?
Anyhow, clear the code and then start the car up. If the code doesn't come back, pul the EST bypass wire and cherck your timing.
Clear the code 42 that will be set by disconnnecting the EST bypass. Next time the code comes on, pull the timing light out and double check the timing with the EST bypassed. This is to make sure that your EST module isn't acting up. If your timing is the same, then it is time to check for voltage drops on one of the 4 wires that runs to your EST module. Yeah, it could be the knock sensor, but try to get your car to duplicate the problem first. That way, you will be able to see a pattern. Also note how long it takes for the code to set once the car is running. -Matt-
Knock Sensor - 1) check all connections to make sure it isn't one of them 2) check knock sensor as per Manual for resistance & voltage spec. 3) if the sensor needs repalcing and you buy new ones make sure you do 2) before paying for them.
Bought a brand new set and one was a dud, still giving the code 43 after it was fitted. Took us ages to eventually find that one of the new sensors was faulty.
Once replaced with a good one, haven't had a problem since.
Reset your timing to the correct specs. if it is set at -5degs. that could be your problem, I bet the code sets when it warms up and you do a hard acceleration. If the timing is retarted it will fail the performance test, so you have to know it's set correctly. Unhook the tan and black wire neer the wiper motor this will put it in bypass then set it to +6degs BTDC reconnect the wire and restart the car and try again.
