Default Head Gasket pondering.... boosters inside for some yacking

Hey fellas,

I am putting the motor for the vette together right now and have just built this thing to the hilt and am trying to think of the best combination for the head gasket setup.

the finish on the block and head surfaces were done according to my machinist between 25-40 Ra which is the output of his surfacing machine on average deopending on the head material and how soft it is. this was tested using as profilometer that was borrowed when he purchased the machine. I said this was good because it would allow me toswing either way in my decision of MLS or composite head gasket. what are your thoughts on this? I have great success with my Felpro 1074's and head bolts and this go around I am using Head studs on this motor and will be pushing the limits of the entire setup.. I am going to fight for 1000RWHP as my Goal. all who know me already know the supporting components will be used. I want to push the turbo to its end limit (T76MPS) pretty much and then maybe even grab a PT88mm and spray on top of it to see what it will hit on the dyno.

so.. do I attempt the composite 1074, grab a cometic, or a MLS. also I LOVE the sealing power of the composite and considered grabing the o-ringing tool for my bore size 4.030 and finding a Gasket that would work, any ideas?

lets give it a good talkin about!

Chris

I use the 1074s with studs and they seem to work fine. Seriously contemplated Cometics but finish on block was not up to snuff. I've avoided o-rings for fear of breaking something...I'd rather change a head gasket than a piston! just my two cents.

PS-Thanks for your reply re the tune. Also, your dad promised the number to the machine shop there but he hasn't sent it yet. Thx

Well, here's the way I see it.

Felpros
-If you get some detonation these will be much more likely to blow than the Cometics. Which is good if you would rather swap a head gasket than buy new engine parts

-These are proven to hold up pretty well already. I know you're probably going to be pushing 20+psi so keeping it all in may be a bit iffy. But there have been some Camaro guys that have done it.

Cometics
-These things leak oil if properly prepped and installed.

-These will hold forever and won't fail if there's detonation

-You have to get your block/heads resurfaced if you want to use these in the future, so if you're going to do it, now's the time. It'll be much more than a weekend job if the felpros let go from too much power.

If you are very confident in the tune then Cometics would be good. If there's any chance of detonation then the Felpros would be the way to go.
