My Vette has started make a tick sound and I can't find the source. The trans and clutch have no effect. There are no codes and I have checked the rockers, injectors and exhaust. You can hear in the vid that it only ticks every two seconds. Any ideas? I also have a set of LS7 lifters that I'll be installing any advice to make the R/R go smooth.
Thanks Jon
It sounds like the exaust expanding fom the heat. Does it do it only when cold, hot or always?
Or check the serpentine belt. Could be taking a couple seconds to make it all the way around the pulleys.
Sounded like a clanking to me, it also sounds like you checked the most likely causes. My first idea would have been the heat shields on the exhaust manifolds. Loose engine mount, heat shield by fuel filter or knock sensor? Your year may be different then mine. Dip stick clanking on something?
I have to guess here and say it sounds like something is cycling on and off. It is just too consistent to be a rattle and too slow to be internal engine.
If you ruled out the AC clutch already I can't throw anymore ideas. That is the only thing that i could think of that can cycle like that
I would use a mechanics stethoscope. If you have never used one before, they are really cheap and you can hear things you would not believe (like how loud an injector 'clicking' really is). Put the tip on the exhaust, alternator, rocker covers etc. You should be able to narrow it down pretty quickly.
I went over the motor with a stethoscope and the sound was loudest around the center bolts on the driver side intake and valve covers. So I'm thinking that it is a lifter. With the scope I could hear the noise more frequently then just every two seconds.
Thanks for the help
Sounds like to was a lifter. Took about six hours for the swap and I did the TB bypass for the fun of it. The rollers still need a final adjustment but it does sound a lot better and no oil leak from the intake.
