What will adding a Hypertech Chip, K&N Air Filter and Magnaflow Exhaust do for a 93 LT-1 with a six speed? I have calculated that all three combined would give me a combined gain of about 35-40 HP and approximately get me down the 1/4 mile about 4-5 tenths of a second faster. Before I invest, I would love advice from someone who has done this or is well acquainted with these mods.
Well on the 1/4 mile you will see HP increases mostly in trap speed as ET depends mostly on launch.
The K&N with cut air filter lid is worth 10chp.
Since you have a stock 180deg T-stat I dont think the chip will net any HP gains.
Your stock exhaust flows pretty well so I doubt you will see more than 10chp gain there unless you install FL headers.
I would be surprised if you see more than a 2mph gain in trap speed or a .2sec drop in ET.
Thanks for your replies. As far as reading the "Tech FAQ" portion of this site? I didn't know there was one and thought it would be easy to ask fellow Vette owners.
I built my 1969 Vette Mouse motor from it's 350/350 base to a whopping 350/450 motor before there were such things as chips to put in a motor. I changed everything from the top to the bottom to achieve it. I Went with a Holley 750, DP with manual secondaries that I rejetted. Under that was a Torquer II manifold, ported and polished. It had a power curve of 3000-7000 RPM. I forgot what heads I put on because it's been ages. I think they were 202 heads and we did some work to the valves. I went from 11:1 compression to 11:50 compression with a brand new set of pistons too. I did put in a very pricey MSD igniton system to get more spark from the engine as well as a brand new distributor. I went with a solid lift cam from Crane that was something like 500 lift and .288 duration. It was a perfect match for everything in the engine If memory serves me correctly. The car was built to make globs of power between 3000 and 7000 RPM, which it did. The car was very civilized and quiet until you punched it at say 2800 RPM. Being mated to stock 411s out back, the car was a beast until 110 MPH, especially with an M-22 Rock Crusher 4 speed tranny and those old 15 inch "perfromance" tires. Anything above that 110 MPH and you would be looking for very serious troubles. The car ran 13.30 at Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ with street trim and closed exhaust with a trap speed of about 108 MPH. That was 1989. My biggest problem with the car was locating Cam 2 leaded fuel it needed. Back then it was "only" $3.99 a gallon. With gas mileage on that car averaging 10 MPG, it was a wee bit expensive to drive.
I guess what I just figured out is that today there are no magic bullets to increase HP or performance without doing what I did to my 1969 Vette. I think I will keep the 93 LT-1 I have stock. I am just too old to start from scratch again. LOL Out of curiosity, what do stock 6 speed LT-1's do in the 1/4 mile, both in times and MPH? I've read articles putting them anywhere from 13.6 to 14.1.

Thank you,

If you want 35-40 HP gain put in a GM Hotcam kit. It has cam, 1.6 RR's,
springs, and hardware for about $525. www.summitracing.com
Here is a link to the whole hot cam set up including heads. Glad you decided the smoke and mirrors won't do much. Waste of money. The FAQ's are a must read for all new guys who want to work on thier cars along with a FSM.
I asked the questions about cheap and easy performance add-ons because I did not know there was a tech section here. After reading what I read, it had an eery and very familar sound to it. Anyone remember reading the J.C. Whitney catalogs? According to their ads, if you installed their product, your HP would triple and in the process get quadruple the MPG. Grant you, there probably were some decent products in their catalogs but it was always funny to read.
