Well,I spent some money addressing a cooling problem that probably did not exist. Did not realize the primary fan engaged in the 220 range.
Lots of new, maybe unnecessary parts, replaced. Oh, well, just some new things to add to the service list.
I'm also experiencing a rough idle. When I engage the A/C at idle the car will stall. Hit the accelerator in park and I get a backfire. Highway speeds are fine.
Ran some diagnostics with a borrowed Snap-On scanner. WAAAAAAAAYYYYY too much info for my shade-tree-mechanicin', hog-trough-welding, timing-light-operatin', holley-carb-rebuildin', international-tractor-repairin' redneck dumb-a$$. Noticed a lot of jumping around on the O2 sensor numbers, but nothing else looked odd based on my limited knowledge.
Anyone want to offer any preliminary checks I should perform?
I got my '96 in the 80K mile range. It started acting up at stoplights with the the AC on around 125K. The engine would surge and hunt. It turned out my opti was toast. When I removed it oil came pouring out. My distributor bearings were shot and the seal in the front cover was also bad. I replaced the opti and seal. I ultimately bought an MSD. Now I can hit the rev limiter very quickly and the car idles very well. You'rs may be going south. The backfire may be caused by bad timing. You can probably limp the car along, but you probably are looking at a new opti soon.
