Default Bad MAF Sensor?

How do you know if your MAF sensor is bad? My '96 LT1 has a Granatelli MAF which is no more than 4 years old. City Fuel economy is down to around 13 mpg, but highway still gets 25-28 mpg. No codes thrown. Recently replaced plugs, wires, EGR valve & solenoid, O2 sensors. A mechanic I had work to replace the FPR said the MAF sensor 'checked out bad'. Any thing I can do to verify this?

Thanks.

Well, I wasn't able to test the MAF, but talked to a friend who knows much about these things. He said if the mileage is low and the tailpipes looked more sooty than normal, replace the MAF. I replaced it with a new Granatelli 80mm MAF with cold air tuning from Jegs.

It purrs and runs like a champ, accelerates much better from a stop (no hesitation), and the mileage is way up.

Hope this helps someone else.

Glad it worked for you, but it's better to scan and see what fuel delivery looks like before purchasing parts.

This may be a stupid question but did you try cleaning it first? My stock MAF is still working at 100k miles. I clean it every 4 to 6 months.

Yes, for sure. I didn't have access to a scanner. It was a 'best guess' considering the inputs mentioned above.

Also, I have been cleaning the MAF with cleaner every 6 months or so.
