Default PLease Help wrong ECM and Prom

Hello,

I have a 1985 Camaro with a 350 87 vette motor. Found out that it still has the 1985 305 Camaro ECM and prom in it... Would the casting numbers on the vette help? If so does anyone know where they are cause i can not find them. How am i supposed to get the right ECM and prom for the new motor to get it to run right? THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS!!!

Are you using the injectors from the 350 or the 305? The rest
of the two set-ups are near enough the same to run ok. The
real hardcore prom board is www.thirdgen.org. Good luck with
it. benny

The ecm should be the same. The proms are different, but the
casting numbers don't matter. A 350 is a 350. The ecm doesn't
know or care where it came from. I don't burn my own proms
so i don't want to mislead you here. benny

The only stupid question is unasked.

The 85 camaro had a tpi on it right? If so, it should be the 165 ECM.
All things being the same, auto to auto and manual to manual.
You should be able to use a 85 350 prom, available from the dealer, if they're still available.
If you used the 85 wiring harness, all you should need is a prom, or a bin file for a 350 camaro

What kind of problems are you having, be a bit more specific.

ok so i was looking and you are right the ecm's are the same..... its and 87 350 tpi.... so the problems i am haveing are: 1. surge in the idle after a few min after startup... 2. damn thing is dumping fuel like there is no tomorrow.... 3. Sounds like there is a valve tap 4. when driving for the first few mins the car hesitates... but then what prom do i use i heard there about 6 diffrent ones? Do i use any 350 prom? thanks for the help

Need to check fuel pressure...do any necessary tests, too high, too low, no hold, make sure vacuum is hooked up, 8-10 psi change with vacuum on / off.
Check MAF connections, no tears in bellows between MAF and TB clamps good and tight, all vacuum hoses on TB, don't forget one on bottom.
EGR leaking?
Prom should be easy, 85 camaro, 350, gears, auto/std, get a new prom, or reprogram yours. If still available from dealer, around $60.

Changed the MAF, going to check the fuel pressure regulator tomorrow. I was just reading up on the ecm's and proms the 1227165 ecm is not for my 85 camaro but like you said it is for the 87 350 so I think i might have to change that.... the dealer is being a pain about the proms they want the prom # from the 87 350 before they do anything....so thats no help lol but i did find a website i just dont know which would be for me
I did not see an egr leak.

STOP.Forget the engine you are now using came from an 87 Corvette. The ECM in your F body(1226870) will attempt to manage whatever is there just as if it was the original 5 ltr. I am making a very bold assumption that when you did the swap you also swapped all the sensors from the old engine to the new one. The car should run but not very well. Not real sure but I suspect it would be very lean. If you can find a PROM from an 85 Corvette OR have your PROM reprogramed to that config the car should run just fine. To learn more about ECM/PROM/ go here:http://www.cruzers.com/~ludis/c3xref.html
Two added thoughts: the PROM from an 85 5.7L F Body will work. ECM/PROMS from the 85 era are becoming more and more difficult to locate. If all else fails there is a way to upgrade to a later (Corvette 86-89) ECM for which PROMS can be had.

the 1985 tpi emc was the 1226870. The camero was only available with the 5.0 and the corvette came with the 5.7. The computer is the same with a the 5.0 or 5.7 prom. The 85 also was the only year to have the MAF burn off module.
