I like this topic no matter what forum I am on. This is not near as big a p***ing match as over on the dieselplace forum. I have 2:48 gears in mine and sure would like little more low end torque. Later! Frank
On the street, the goal is to get the most HP that's still driveable. "Driveable" means different things to each of us and since there's only about 3500 useable RPM (as noted above), get this useable band as high as you can and still remain within your definition of "driveable".
Forget torque. If torque were that important, we'd be installing Cummins Diesels in our rigs. We're talking about Corvettes that weigh 3200~ lbs and have 4, 5, or 6 speed tranny's.
Still not convinced? Ok,..we'll race two identical C4's. You shift a bit past peak torque and I'll shift a bit past peak HP and let's see who wins the race.

I have an 86 and took the automatic out and put in a Richmond 6 speed and changed the tpi to an edlebrock dual plane intake and a holley 770, also went to roller rockers 1.6 on the intakes, and believe me you will love the HP increase and i didnt loose any torque, just a little higher rpm, rating is over 325 hp at rear wheels

Assuming you also have an A4 behind your engine I strongly suggest you install a 2,400rpm lockup TC and a TransGo shift kit for a totally new "driving experience"...
