Default scanner and 85 get divorced

i take the 85 to a mechanic to hook up to his scanner. getting a check engine light. he hooks the scanner to my 85, tries abunch of buttons and says my car will not give any info to his scanner. this is the same scanner that worked on anothers guys 88 recently. Has anybody heard of this problem before?

Have not heard of this but isnt a 85 the slow baud rate of 160 and the 88 the faster 8192?

The transfer rate maybe different but it should at least give slow info to the mechanics scanner shouldnt it?
