Corvette's used 5.7L while the Caprice used the 5.0L version of the LT1.

from Impala SS forum FAQ page:
14.How come the Camaro has a 300 HP LT1, and the Impala SS is rated at 260 HP?
What's the difference?
For the Impala, GM produces an iron head version of the LT1. The
Camaro, and Corvette come with a lighter, aluminum head LT1. The
camshaft in the iron head LT1 is milder than the ones available in the
other LT1 powered GM cars. The basic idea is that such awesome power
in the hands of normal America could be dangerous. GM limited the HP
rating on the Impala so as not to push it's handling envelope. Here
are some major differences:
The caprice could also get the "mini LT1" which is a 265 v8, and the only way to be sure it's not is to check the engine codes or option code sticker on the trunk lid.
up to abt 4500 rpm the caprice lt1, with iron heads that actually flow better than the alum heads and camshaft selected to produce low end torque , makes more power than the vette lt1 (reqd because typ caprice sedan weighs almost 1000 lb more than vette, caprice wagons add another 600 lb)...caprice "hushed" intake tract and restrictive exhaust sacrifice some power at higher rpm.
lt1's are 350 ci, but the L99 (265 ci) looks exactly like the lt1 externally, hence the nickname "baby lt1"...gotta look close to tell em apart, even many "police" caprices (green radiator hoses) were ordered with the L99... fuel injectors are smaller flow for L99, different number on injector body.

If it wasn't a police package, or an Impala SS, could you even get the LT1 in a Caprice? I thought only the Roadmaster had them in "regular" trims of the B-body.

Yes, you could get the lt1 without the police package. I lost a bet on that one.

Why do people post bad info? Or is it that they "think" they know the correct info?
If I'm not 100% sure I'll start a relpy with "I think" and make clear that "I'm not sure". Or "I believe"
I would hate for someone to buy a Caprice motor as a replacement for thier blown Vette LT1 thinking they are getting the "same" motor... Then find out it is totally different (Or moslty different) motor
I guess you have too be really carefull as to what you see posted on the forum...
