When we were kids if we had an engine that tended to run hot we would pull the thermostat out. Of course none of us ever bothered to see if there was much of a difference.
Question for those with experience with this:
My beast is running just a little warm (as expected) and I was wondering if you think pulling the stat would drop the temp down a few. I don't care about the heater (heck, I don't even have wipers yet )
For those that don't remember it is a .030 over 454 using the original cooling system with adjustable fan switches.
I used to run a radiator shop years ago. If you remove the thermostat one of 2 things can/will happen:
1. the engine will NEVER get up to operating temp because the water is constantly being cooled. This can be a bad thing as far as emissions and performance.
2. the engine will run hot as the coolant moves too fast thru the block and heads that the heat is NOT transferred to the coolant.
If you really want to get rid of the thermostat what you should do is pull the tstat and in its place put a restrictor, like a big washer that closes down the diameter of the housing to partially restrict flow and slow down the coolant.
