Just use a good quality oil (synthetic, ideally), and a good quality filter, and change it frequently. Oil additives are snake oil -- nothing but a waste of money.
Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering as in the old car world the new oils contain less zzp and are said to be a problem in cars with flat tappets.
You can use an oil made for diesel's they have the added zinc in them. You do not want to use full synthetic in an older motor the esters in the synthetic will weaken the rubber seals in your motor and cause it to leak oil. Most likely at the rear main seal.
Most additives are but ZZP is the a great product.Diesel oil will work but eventually they will be restricted of certain anti wear additives just like what is happening to automotive oil.If I had a flat tappet cam I would be using it.I've also used GMs EOS on a lot of motors.Great for noisy lifters and fresh rebuilds.
Take care.
