Front stock pads for base LT1 1996 w/ J55 (no GS or CE option) are: GM #12518935 (ACDelco 171-735).
However ACDelco #17D412M (semi metallic? and cheaper) or ACDelco #17D412C (ceramic?) also cross references.
Can anyone shed any light on the different OEM(?) pads available for this application? I just want stock or original performance - nothing too aggressive on rotors and hopefully not too bad on dust.

Front rotors:
FR- LH GM# 10052203 (ACDelco 177-678) or ACDelco 18A684
FR- RH GM# 10052204 (ACDelco 177-679) or ACDelco 18A685
Again same question - besides price - any difference in these 2 part #s I should be aware of?
you're splitting hairs. as a general rule ceramics don't dust much and the performance is good on a first stop year round. the crossed part represents a newer pad that was not available when most if not all C4s were made, at least that's my guess. also, the caliper is the same on both the 12 and 13" fronts after 1988. basic PBR twin piston.
...there's a considerable price difference (at least to me) of anywhere from $60-$125 AND one is specifically "semi-metallic" while the other pad material is unknown to me beyond being "OEM" material.
Q: So if there is only a splitting hair difference - are you saying they are BOTH in fact semi-metallic?
Q: Is the #12518935 (ACDelco #171-735) for 'PBR' OEM pads and the ACDelco #17D412M for Delco 'equivalent' replacement pads?
The 'C' number is only if "originally equipped" w/ ceramic. AFAIK '96 C4s were not so equipped.
The 'M' number is only if originally equipped w/ semi-metallic. Not sure but I think the original J55 PBR pads were semi-metallic...?
i believe you are correct on the J55 being semi metalic. as far as my splitting hairs comment, it was based more on real world usage than authenticity. if you want the factory correct part i'm honestly of no use, but i can tell you the difference between semi metalic and ceramic is not all that large. were you after a correct part? or were you more concerned with price and performance? both ceramic and semi metalic would make great daily driver pads. the hawk brand ceramic is a favoritie in my area for low rotor wear and very low dusting.
I'm after basically factory-like performance for a street driven C4. That being the same/comparable basic stopping power, longevity, aggressiveness on rotors and dusting that is 'no worse' than factory. I couldn't care less about 'correctness' just something that has same/similar tradeoffs as the original PBRs. Generally I've found GM/ACDelco brake parts to be of good quality. Not trying to save a dime (ACDelcos are hardly the cheapest out there) but if all things are equal more or less - sure I'll go for less expensive pads of the two.
That being said I've looked at a LOT of searches on this forum on the brake topic. Wasn't wanting to start 'yet another brake thread'. Based on those searches the Hawk HPS pads have caught my interest as well.
Ceramics? I have read a lot of threads but no experience. Would the Hawk Ceramics be oriented more towards a Hawk HPS or a Hawk HP+ type application?
The Raybestos and NAPA ceramics seem to have some satisfied folks too... (along w/ Wagner THermoQuiet (not Ceramic) pad users which I've also used w/ good results on other cars)
FYI the front rotors will be swapped as well w/ new ACDelco replacement replacements.
The HPS is a more aggressive pad than the factory or the ceramics. Most of us, myself included live with the slightly higher rate of dust for the increase in performance. The HPS is a really nice street pad, i have a set on my own car. Second set on the same rotors actually. The reason i mentioned the Hawk ceramic is because it dusts less than the HPS. In all honesty i believe you will be happy with either OE or the Hawk. I base that on your post and the fact you seem to be after a fairly easy goal. As far as the NAPA ceramics, i have a set on my Acura {daily driver} great first bite but they fade fast if you start driving aggressive. What i love is how little dust they generate. It's a red car with bronze wheels and i never have to use wheel cleaner when i wash the car, very little dust. Hawk is generally thought of as a better brand than NAPA, if they are actually better....who knows?
