i was on the brink of ordering a fan switch from mid america that would turn my fans on at 200 and off at 185, but i got to thinking. Would this make my fan run all the time on a hot day since i live in texas? If so would this be bad? Should i get a manual switch instead? Id really prefer to have an auto one but not if its going to hurt my car.
I'd say get the auto on at 200 and replace your thermostat with a 160 and it should work just fine. If you put in the fan switch without changing the thermostat you will have the fans running all the time since the factory one doesn't open until 195. I would also recommend removing the radiator and spraying it down with a degreaser from the front and back and then spray it from the back with a garden hose to wash all the crap out. You'll be amazed what comes out of it I was. I did this with a 180 degree thermostat in Michigan and my car runs about 50 deg cooler than it was.
For the highway the auto sw it the real deal. I run a 160 deg stat and 160 deg sw. On a hot summer day both fans run constantly in city traffic, but I'm trying to keep it cool under there so that's fine with me.
You could also wire in a manual sw for use at the track if desired.
I would probably prefer a manual switch, but since I'm going to be reprogramming my computer with TunerCat or LT1 Edit, I can change the settings any time I want on it.
