how hard is it to rebuild the 4l60e, can this be done at home. and what rebuild kit should i go with
Call Probuilt. I ordered a kit from them last month. I had a local shop rebuild it though. I would have loved to attempted it myself but it's my only ride right now. They spent a lot of time on the phone with me and were extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
Do a search using "transmission rebuild." There is an extension discussion with lots of high quality photos. (user name SLIDING)
Also, there is a video that costs about 30 bucks. (I can sell you mine when Im finsihed this weeekend))
Myself, I am rebuilding my 4l60e, using the video and my own photographs and videos of the teardown.
I have a good mechanical background, however, I believe that anyone who can rebuild an engine, can rebuild the 4l60e. You must pay attention to detail, check and double check, and double check again.
After you look at the parts for a while, it becomes clear that the 4l60e. . . which has less moving parts than its governor opertated predecessor, is not that bad.
I would recommend that you at least buy the Beast sunshell, and the raybestos Z pack for the 3/4 clutches. THe rest is a toss up in my opinion.
I did my 700R4. Got the books from ATSG and did the deed step by step. There were two steps I couldn't do,required special tools I couldn't work around. If you are serious jump on that video
