I see that stock LT1 dyno around 265-275rwhp. That's 312-324hp with 15% loss and 331-344hp with 20% loss  Are they underrated or do they lose a lot less power thru the drivetrain than most other cars
Yeah, mine really surprised me. I did some quick calc's on my tq #'s. I would have to have only ~ 3.x% loss to get the GM claimed crank tq. I think they are **slightly** underrated.
I think the difference you seeing is because of the way the motors are rated. Factory HP is rated using SAE test standard. That is supposed to be with all accesories operating at a specific temp, air pressure and humidity. I don't know what they mean by all accessories (alt, waterpump, air pump, ac, ps ?????). I am guessing that ac and ps are not included. The 92 and up LT1 is supposed to make more HP than the original LT1 produced in 1970.
I think the LT1 is definitely underrated. Mr. Mojo and John Mackey are two guys that have proved what a well driven LT1 can do. The problem is, most guys can't drive the way they do and never actually see their potential. They're awesome motors in my opinion.
remember that in 1972, SAE changed their calculations for hp...
but the LT1 is one strong motor... I suspect the LT1 is closer to 320hp and the LT4 is closer to 350 -- or more!!!
I have not been disappointed with the choice I made to get an LT1 powered vette, versus an L98... the opti is such a minor issue, that it does not ruin such a fine powerplant.
