Hello. My name is Eyesman and I'm a Vettaholic. Actually I recently bought my first Vette, a 92 coupe with an auto trans. I really like the car a lot. After riding motorcycles for many years, this car is the closest thing I have found to the feel of riding one. Anyway, the car runs great, and has been well cared for. I have noticed that sometimes when I start it, especially cold, it makes a whine for about a minute then quits. it sounds like it might be trying to pressurize something. It's not the antenna going up. I think it may be in the A/C. Is this normal? Thanks in advance for any ideas anyone may have. I'll try to post some pictures soon
I am also a former (35 years) motorcyclist who switched to a 93 Ruby about 6 months ago. I noticed that mine makes some unusually sounds at first startup particularly when cold. I get a loud squeal but only for a couple of seconds. When I first heard it I thought I decapitated a mouse or some other varmint. The serpentine is new. But the car runs great and I don't worry about it. As the weather warms up, it does not seem to do it.
There are a couple of sounds you may be hearing, one is the electric air pump that helps to heat up the CAT's, it runs briefly after start up. The motor located below the drivers side headlamp, if you put your hand on it you will be able to tell when it stops. I confused the sound with the cooling fan until I realized what it was.
The ABS also does a self check one time when you first move the car, just a short vibration as the valves cycle, the sound comes from behind the drivers seat.
Mine whines, too. I've got my engine apart right now. The 1st thing I suspect is the alternator. When I spin it by hand, it has a sqeak to it. The 2nd thing it might be, is the idler pulley. I took it off and spun it and it feels like there are small ripples around the bearings.
