I am starting the build for my 85 with a ZZ4 short block. This came assembled with pistons, rods and crank. I pulled all of these out to have this assembly balanced. Details on this balance later.
Years and years ago, when I built another engine from the bare block up, my machinest told me to wipe the cylinder walls with toilet paper dipped in ATF. He told me that even though the cylinders look clear and clean they were not. His instructions were to change the paper as it was dirty and keep cleaning the walls until the paper was no longer dirty. Well I did this with the ZZ4 block (remember I just pulled the pistons as assembled by GM) and the walls were dirty. But I didn't take any pictures of this operation.
I started thinking today that the lifter holes were probably cleaned by GM the same way. This time I got pictures. Here is what I got out of the lifter holes on the very first wipe!
The one piece of paper that is horizontal is the final out come after cleaning several times just as an example.
