have to come off? how about the rack for the steering? i have the water pump off and have moved the harmonic balancer about 3/4 of a inch. is there enough room to get it the rest of the way off with out removing these other two items?it showes to have about 1/2 inch left until its against the steering rack. the belt pully and the balancer appear to be one piece. i am used to working on older cars [ points, carbs etc,] and the crank pully usually seperates from the harmonic balancer but this one appears to be one piece. any help would be app. thanks robert
ok guys this is what i have figured out. the dampner is mounted to a hub by three bolts that is pressed onto the end of the crank. it is not like a older dampner. after 6 hours of fighting this if figured out i was cocking? the dampner on the crankshaft hub and that is what was locking the whole mess up. the more i work on the 92 the better i like my 71. thanks for all the help. you guys are great take a beer out of petty cash. thanks robert
got the opti off and opened up. it is a solid piece of rust. i am impressed that it would even run. the seal around the cap was broken in 4 places. all the internals were rusted beyond repair. i never understood why they called it opticrap now i know. this car has 90 thou on it . i have never seen a ignition system is this bad of shape. the only thing that was not litterly covered with a 1/16 layer of rust was the plastic shielding and a 3inch disc with little slots cut around the edge that appears to be made out of stainless. i take very good care of my cars and am in shock that this could happen. if there are anymore suprises that i should know about please let me know. thanks robert
Rusted opti is no real surpise. The fact that it lasted 90K is.
Be sure to follow the forum tech tip on sealing and venting the new distributor. I would also put silicone sealer on the ring that is machined in the timing cover that mates to the back of the opti. That should keep any water out of the bearing. Be carefull putting the opti driveshaft in correctly. Its keyed but its been known to go in incorrectly. Make sure you put the waterpump drive collar with the end that has a slit all way around towards the timing cover. Its designed to shear at that point if the waterpump seizes. Double check that you put the driveshaft on. Somebody on the forum left it off and didn't find out about until the motor way overheated. The temp digital temp sensor won't read the correct temp when the waterpump is not turning.
Oh yes, I hope you got the new opti from a discount dealer for around 300 and not GMs 650 price.
