Got a '92, and the power antenna just started acting up. It is stuck in the 'up' position. When I turn the radio on or off, I can hear the motor whirring for the appropriate time, but the antenna doesn't move. I believe it's a simple part to obtain and replace, but who can tell me what part and how to replace it? TIA.
The mast kit is only about 30 dollars or so. I got mine out of MAD. I went ahead and ordered the little switch too, since I hope it will prolong the life of my antenna motor. I usually dont listen to the radio (the engine sounds like music to me, thank you) but when I do, I use CD's.
I had to replace mine because the last few inches would fail to retract in the down position.
Most people wouldn't care, but I did since this is a Vette.
I had to take off the rear wheel, and inner fender skirt. Went to Auto Zone and bought a power antenna for $40. After jury rigging the bottom support with extra shims so the antenna was up against the bottom of the hole it comes out of, I had it working....almost
I stupidly cut and spliced the antenna connector on the new antenna with the old antenna wire that goes to the radio. I got awful reception for a couple months......Radio was nearly useless
The reason why I did this...I didn't want to find out where the antenna wire junction was. Turns out, its under the rear carpet by the rear speaker, had to pry out a bulkhead plug the antenna wire (from antenna to antenna junction), and remove some carpet to get to the junction. I since found the junction and replaced that wire section with an unspliced whole section that had a male connector on one end, and a screw on fitting that screwed onto the bottom of the antenna mast.
Sounds to me like the mast ribbon is broken, which means there will be a piece of the ribbon left inside the antenna motor when you remove the mast. You'll have to take the motor housing apart, remove the broken ribbon, and then install the new mast.
May sound like a lot of work, but it really isn't.
