In Nov I hit a brick & busted my trans cooler, so Ralph helped (see HE DID IT ALL) put in a new one... We had to have it done THAT night because the following day was the Corvette Challenge final..
well we could only find a heavy duty cooler. & put that one in.. Anyway in 60 deg weather the trans temp was around 170..
Tonight it is 28 deg here in Somers NY... I took the car out & the trans temp never got over 135....
Engine oil got to 188 which is fine with me.. but I think the tranny temp is kinda low.. It would even go as low as 125 when the converter was locked up for a few miles..
I think it will be ok as I dont drive it hard in this weather, I just run it 10-15 miles a week to charge the battery etc..
To be honest I dont even remember the brand name, but it was something like Pep Boys, or one of the chain car stores... Not a big brand name.. if Ralph sees this he may still have the box in his garage where we (HE) did the install..
I do know it said it was rated for 26,000 lb & towing.. its approx 12"x15" x 1/2"thick
Re: With New Trans Cooler its TOO Cool.. (Red96Coupe)
i understand the engine running too cool can impact the combustion characteristics and the oil not getting hot enough can cause buildups like water, but since there is no combustion in the tranny is it really bad to run it too cool?
It seems to be running a good temp at 60 degrees. But 28 degrees is freezing over here. It seriously doesn't look all that bad. What did your other tranny cooler run at? What size was that?
I have a friend who rebuilds transmissions for a local transmission shop. He has told me before (this was on a 90 dodge truck) to run through the aux. trans cooler first and then into the one into the radiator, then back to the transmission. He says if the fluid is to cold, it can foam when it goes into the transmission.

Re: With New Trans Cooler its TOO Cool.. (Red96Coupe)
Very common on trucks set up for towing, when not towing trans can get too cold. I think Summit sells an in-line thermostat for the trans cooler, not sure what ranges are available.
Here is a link to a chart that supports too cool can reduce trans life. Another idea, why not just cover the cooler in the winter, you know like the trucks you see with cardboard over the radiator in the winter? http://performanceunlimited.com/documents/img111.gif

I know you're not driving too far but have you ever had a plastic bag get stuck on your exhaust ? -lol
It happened to me once and the smell lasted for like a week, seemed that long anyway.
I would cut out a piece of cardboard and use some zip ties or something.
Good info to know about the trans temps & outside air temp btw, thanks.

Try to find the info on which cooler you used, my vette is purely a summer car and the tranny gets friggin roasting!!!!!!!!!
It's an auto and the plastic on top of it gets hot to the touch, does no good at all for the cup holders there, I'd love to cool that bastard down some ;)

Hey Bob,
I had a 86 4+3 and the console was always hot on it. Found out that there is a outer boot where the gear shifter goes through the tunnel that was torn. I understand this is a common problem on the 4+3 if someone had removed the transmission.
