Default Just bought an 84...

And I'm having some problems.
It has 62,000 miles on it
I believe it is a 1984 or an 85. However, it does have a 1992 body kit on it.
Automatic Transmission
First of, while driving, the car seems to pull to the right.. and it seems to be coming from the rear. I redid every bushing on the rear suspension, replace both rear rotors, pads, and calipers, and still am having the same thing... Don't know whats wrong. Any ideas?

Secondly, Whenever you shift it into a gear other than neutral or park, it makes a loud thump noise. Anyone have a problem like this?

And lastly, It runs like crap. I really don't know much about the "crossfire injection", and don't know much about tuning it. I'm going to replace all the ignition tomorrow (wires, plugs, cap, rotor). Hopefully that fixes it, but any ideas on tuning it to help it run a little bit better?

I'm hoping to get it ready by the last weekend of this month to take it racing.

Have you had an alignment since you redid the bushings? I believe that's recommended everytime the suspension is worked on, adjusted or taken off the car.

Your problem with the thud sounds familiar as in the past when I shifted from Park to OD while depressing the brake pedal the car would buck slightly and I would also hear a thud or a "clunk" noise. On a slick surface when I had the oil changed one time and I shifted into OD with the brake depressed, the car bucked and the tires slipped making a squealing noise very briefly.

Guess it could be a lot of things from the trans back. What shape are your u-joints in? When in OD does the trans sluggishly shift from 2nd to 3rd? Your problems with the thud noise seem identical to mine that's why I want to say it's a problem isolated in the trans which didn't like shifting from 2nd to 3rd under slow to medium acceleration conditions.

Your Crossfire sounds like it may need a good top end cleaning. This may offer some insight:

HOWEVER, the real experts on here hopefully will help you out very soon. Hang in there.

Check out the Crossfie Injection Vault. It is a site dedicated to Crossfire Injection. http://www.crossfire.homeip.net/

What are the symptoms and are there any codes? Proper troubleshooting is the only way to go to get your CF running properly. One mistake people make is they just start throwing parts at it and they get frustrated because their problems are not corrected. Pick up a FSM (Facotry Shop Manual) to help with the troubleshooting.

The car was doing the pulling before I changed the busings, I noticed the bushings looked like crap so I replaced them hoping it would fix it.. but it didn't.

I don't know if the computer is throwing any codes. How do I check it?

I'll look at everything else you guys told me though.

Go to the Crossfire Forum (link in my first post) and do a search and you will find the info.

You can also go here to find a description of the codes -> http://www.crossfireinjection.net/DCS How To.html

Possibly it needed an alignment, BEFORE you fixed it. That is one problems of making "repairs" (changing parts) before determining the cause.

The procedure COULD be explained, and a list of which code indicates what circuit could be also, but you will still need the FSM for the trouble shooting charts in order to make the proper diagnosis and repairs, without needlessly throwing parts at it.

RACE ON!!!

PS. Only the 1984 had the Crossfire. The 1985 was the first year of the TPI.

"Pulling" could be many things, from unequal tire pressure, to belt problems with a (some) tires, to brakes, etc. Crowned roads play a role, too.

The "thump" must come from a place. Can you tell where: mid-car? year? happens only when initially selecting a gear?

The CrossFire was an okay setup with high RPM limitations with the stock manifold. Mine developed air leaks (butterfly shaft bushings), then had leaky TBs.

Is the check engine light on? That's the start for pulling ECM codes, but the basics still apply, like vacuum leaks, ignition system condition, fuel delivery problems. I prefer top check the operation of components, not just throw parts, especially when these cars have many sensors that feed info to the ECM, in addition to plugs, wires, filters, gaskets and pumps.

The car is likely out of alignment. Also, while you're having it done get a couple more degres of caster put in the front. My '84, even when properly aligned, always seemed to "fidgety" and liked to follow tractor-trailer grooves too much. I came across an old article that talked about it and said upping the front caster (not camber) made a huge difference; and it did.

I'm going to bet that the "clunk" is U-joints. Start by checking the two on the driveshaft (but I'd go on and replace them all while I was in there).
