Default '87 ECM programming, hardware/software needed.

Pretty simple really....

Links?
Prices?
Available BINs?

Thanks. :)

....perhaps an FAQ can be made with simple "if you have year XX, then you need XX stuff to do it."

I've got an '86, so you need the same stuff I got...

Pocket Programmer
Brand New MemCal from 18carfan (for emergency use, plus copy new BIN off it)
ZIF socket soldered to "old" MemCal
29C256 EPROMs; I got 5 (about $5 ea)
TunerCat
Craig moates software
an old laptop (486dx66 in my case)
AKM ALDL-to-PC cable

...You're ready to rock & roll!!! :D

I've got an '86, so you need the same stuff I got...

Pocket Programmer
Or the Needham's EMP-10 is also a good programmer. Cost anywhere from $139-$200 for beginner level programmers and go up from there.

Brand New MemCal from 18carfan (for emergency use, plus copy new BIN off it)
ZIF socket soldered to "old" MemCal
29C256 EPROMs; I got 5 (about $5 ea)
Spare prom chip runs about $40-$60 depending on where you get it. I usually have one spare that I erase and re-program and tuck away the stock one for a rainy day.

TunerCat
Tunercat runs $69 plus $20 for each 'definition' file. You would use the $32b tdf file for an '87.

Craig moates software
This is a great alternative to Diacom. I've never used it, but I know it's free!

an old laptop (486dx66 in my case)
Compaq LTE 40 is what I use. I had a thinkpad 755c which worked great for my '85, but didn't want to connect to my '90 and some '86-'89 cars. After research, I've found that the Compaq works better. Something about the chipset used for the parallel port. I paid $50 for the laptop on Ebay and the battery still holds a charge.

AKM ALDL-to-PC cable
I think this runs about $90....

All that plus alot of reading will get you going!

Thanks, but now I'm here to pass on the baton!!!

I'm not an expert by any means, but I have been lucky and been able to do about 100 great chips over the last two years, and a few not so great :(

Just like the parable.... 'Give a man a fish and feed him once. Teach a man to fish and feed him for life.'

I hope that I can teach what I know so that others can help themselves.

i use the pocket programmer from http://www.xtronics.com

also make sure you use 29c256 flash proms. the bin file for the MAF chip is 128k, but the chip is 256k so there is a certian address you have to burn it to get the flash proms to work, but they do work. on MAP the bin files are 256k so the flash proms are the correct size. so just get you a memcal with a stock part number from gmpartsdirect.com or a dealer by you, take the chip out of it, and solder in a 28 PDIP pin socket you can get from radio shack. it doesnt have to be a zif socket, but they are better. then use a scan tool ( i use craig moates free software, it works GREAT) and i use tunercat and winbin. winbin is free, tunercat isnt. ill mail you some more info i have scorp.

Just leave the "start of buffer" 00000; change "start of device" to 04000 and "end of device" should be 07FFF

I disagree with the need for a $40-$60 chip. Properly done, you can desolder the stock chip from a memcal and just swap the chip. I have two cars currently running that use a new chip (cost: about $5 each) that is friction fit into the memcal and it works fine. Been running for almost a year on one and 6 months on the other. You have to take a little care in ensuring the chip is actually held captive but it can be done. You can then just down load a base program from one of the bin repositories on line to begin programming from.

I'm always looking for a cheaper way :)
