I just bought a scanner for my 89 automatic. I am purposely leaving out the name of the scan equipment, I don't know if the errors are coming from my car or their software.
After the first scan, I got these obviously false readings.
Scan was done in my parking space, at an idle, never touching the gas peddle or gear shift. The scan was showing the AC on even though it was off. While recording I turned the AC on waited then turned it off, the scan never wavered from saying it was on. The scan showed the car in Drive, I never took it out of park. The scan showed the coolant temp never wavering from 227.3 F yet the gauge climbed and held at 180 +/-.
Did the instructions say to start the engine, or just turn the key to the on position and wait for further instructions on the screen?
It said to turn the key to on, that brought up a graphic that showed the connection was made, no further instructions. Perhaps there would have been if I had waited. I will certainly do another scan, this time waiting to see it it gives any. Could my "jumping the gun" create this situation?

Just wondering. Some start the engine even though you aren't supposed to do so.
After it shows a connection is made, I'd wait 15-30 seconds for the ECM to go through (I think) it's security check before continuing any steps to start the scan. I think it is supposed to offer you a menu to start the scan.
Good luck.
