Default 89 Third tail light bulbs good - no light!

I took my third tail light loose and was going to replace the bulbs as it is not working. I decided to test them first by touching the contacts with a 12 volt supply - three of the four lit up. Any idea where I should start to look for the problem? Thanks Eddy

Look at the switch at the pedal. My 87 was showing 12 V back at the light but it was a weak 12 V and wouild not light a single bulb. This was about 8 years ago so I do not remember much else about it, but a $10 switch fixed it.

On my '88 one side of the bulb is at ground potential (0Vdc) while the other side is only at +12Vdc when the brake pedal is depressed.

Thanks sounds like its time to get the mirror out and start working. My two assistants lose interest after 5 minutes of helping unless there is an ice cream bar involved.

The brake light switch above the pedal has two separate switches iwthin the switch assembly. One is for the brake lights, the other is for the 3rd brake light. There is a light blue wire in that harness that goes to the 3rd brake light.

With the pedal depressed, that wire should have 12v going thru it. Try puttinv 12v to the light blue wire and see if the 3rd brake light illuminates. Chances are it's a bad switch.

It definitely is the switch.... I tore my hair out along with the carpet in the rear thinking it was a faulty ground. I had voltage at the socket new bulb... sure as sh*t it was the switch!! After I was done I read the FSM and it said if the 3rd light doesnt work repalce the switch DUH.

BULLSEYE!! First of all c4cruiser the jumper test worked like a charm and Pbergman I pulled the switch and tested it with my multimeter and it was working so after I read your post and then tested with c4's idea it saved me a ton of time! Thanks Guys your input was spot on!
