What exactly does the AIR system do ???

What exactly does the AIR system do ???
I assume that the metal lines that go into the tops of my exhaust manafolds are for the AIR system. What is this, what does it do, & is it needed.
NOTE: LT4 engine !!!!!!!!! (so no EGR)

Injects air into the exhaust stream so unburned fuel can continue to burn THUS, reducing unburned exhaust emmisions.

It does those things but mainly it provides air to burn HCs in the exhaust manifold during warm up to quickly bring the O2 sensor (and maybe the cat too) up to operaring temp. After the ECM goes closed loop the air is diverted soley to the cat.
It should be possible to plug the AIR fittings in the exhaust manifold and run a heated O2 sensor with only slightly higher HCs during warm up. Though it's illegal to do this mod without your state's permission/exemption.

Just thought I would add that it is an accronym for "Air Injection Reaction" (isn't that clever??) Those engineers --They have to make the big bucks somehow!
