Does ignition coil need to be changed with the ignition module?

Does ignition coil need to be changed with the ignition module?
I have a 85 stock vette. I bought a new ignition module at the local parts store and the book said that the coil needed to be replaced at the same time. Was there a design change or can I use the old coil?

I was always told to replace both at same time, especially if they had been in there a long time. If you have replaced one or the other recently, should be OK, but you may have a brand new electric part pushing against some increased resisitance of an older part and not get the full benefit of the new part

While you've got it all apart you 'might as well' change it. :) The Delco / Delphi (whatever it's called now) coil is only about $20 through a local parts place. The high perf accel coil is about $50. There is a spring thing and plunger on the bottom seated on foam which may get 'tired' if the old one has been there a while. Also they are wrapped w/ fluid surrounding them. They do break down after many heat cycles not able to mantain as much spark at higher RPM and especially when hot (resistance goes up dramatically).
