Default 1996 cooling fan issue?

Read most of the posts, lots of helpful information, but still cant figure things out. My issue - no cooling fans working. Past posts indicate ground A into B in the prom under the dash. Cant even figure that out, its on the right side under the dash, upside down and i cant orientate which side is which! I need a starting point, should i be checking using the prom like other posts state or check the 3 relays (dont know which one is which by the way).
Does anyone have a current wiring diagram for my model year that can help me.
Also water pump just started to leak, will replace next but figure i should address the no fan issue first. And no, the fans dont work if i turn on the air conditioning with it running. Not being snide, just extremely frustrated, just got it last week, low mileage only 40 k and i thought it was pristine...doh!

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

The fan relays are mounted on the driver's side of the radiator shroud.
I am sure you know where the fuse box is. I have no idea what a 'prom' under the dash is? Maybe the ALDL connector?

Yes, sorry, i was refering to the ALDL, just called it a prom because i couldnt remember the abbreviation - where the diagnostic reader plugs in.

Default Water Pump !!!

I suspect that one or more of your relays have bit the dust. If so, this should be a relative easy fix.

A much bigger problem is your leaking water pump. As I suspect you already know, a leaking pump will quickly kill your Opti-Spark (distributor) unit and your local dealership will want between $800 and $1000 to replace the Opti. Accordingly, I suggest that you attend to the water pump ASAP before it turns into a significant repair bill.

Here is where you can get your new relays - http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...9&dept_id=1126 AND here are the installation instructions - http://www.ecklers.com/Illusrate_pop...jpg&text=50819

On diagram showing the three relays, the bottom two grey ones are for the cooling fans, but what does the top (black bosch) one control?

Default fan relays

All 3 relays are in the dual cooling fan circuit----check fuse #29 inside the car--right side of dash when you open the passenger door---this is on the low current control side of the fan relays---both fans have this fuse in common--this should be either a 5 or 10 amp fuse---whether or not the fans come on at a given engine temp and /or if the A/C is turned on-- is ultimately controled by the PCM .

Glad you posted this, I checked this fuse initially and it was fine, after reading your post, I rechecked the fuse..and unreal, it was blown! Im sure it was fine when i started, but maybe i blew it when i was testing the relays!
Anyways, thanks for the input!

Have you manually spun each fan motor blade to verify the motors spin freely?

Here's the fan diagram which also shows the 3 fuses involved in the fan circuit.

There are 3 relays and two modes of operation when the fans run.

Both fans run at slow speed when the PCM grounds pin A11 Dark Green wire which energizes Relay #1.

Both fans run at high speed when the PCM grounds pin A11 Dark Green wire and pin A10 Dark Blue wire. (All 3 relays are energized).

I've never tried this but If you ground Pin 5 to Pin 6 on the DLC (Data Link Connector) above the drivers right knee and then turn the ignition ON, the 3 Fan relays should energize and both fans should operate at high speed.

Here's a pic of the relays. To tell which relay is which you'd have to look at the color of the wires at the relay socket.

This is what i was looking for!, thanks very much, and yes the fans spin freely. As someone else pointed out, I need a FSM and will be ordering one this week.
Thanks for the diagram.
