Is anybody running this combination?
If so what horsepower and torque #'s are you getting?
I am thinking on putting this in an 84 vette.
Any other combinations that would be better let me know.
The answer is yes, and see my signature for details. I think it needs more tuning (read expensive dyno and chip burning $1K to 1.5K). But it goes like the devil when I jump on it. Wish I had put the LPE 219 cam in before I installed.
I was running this combo in my Z28. I had a ZZ4, Super Ram, and LPE 219/219 cam. Dyno number are in sig. It is good for easy 12s.
I am now running a Mini Ram, ZZ409, ZZ4 combo in my Z. Dyno number will look more like 355-360 RWHP and torque will be about the same. I can run 112 mph trap speeds now.:)
Howcome there is such a huge difference in HP between the 90 and the Z?? Was the vette dynoed without the 219 cam? 250 RWHP seems really really low with this particular setup. I have seen ZBRA's exact setup dyno around 320 to 340, and run low 12s at around 110mph.
ZBRA, what kind of times and MPH did you run with the ZZ-4, 219, and superam setup?

I couldn't keep a transmission in it long enough to make it to the track. I actually lost one on the interstate on my way to the track. I guess it knew what was coming. :D I got tired of putting 700R4s in it, so I swapped to a 6-speed (ZF6). Before I took that to the track, I swapped to a MR/ZZ409.
Wow !!! Who was supplying your 700R4 trannies for you ?? I'd ask for my money back.... as a note, I am running a 90 core 700R4 built to GM standards with 100% GM parts and currently have approxmiately 500-700 hard launching 1.5-1.6 60 ft 11 second passes on mine without a hint of a problem. Forum member Ralph freshened up his tranny a couple of years ago and he probably has a couple hundred low 12 to mid 11 second passes on his 700R4 with no hint of a problem to date. Also forum member LT401vette is getting a couple of hundred 1/4 mile passes out of his 700R4 between freshen ups in his 600 hp 10 second C4..... 700R4's are probably pretty much at their limit in LT401vette's application, but if built correctly in the 1st place, my experience is that they'll last for years and years even in a application with 400+HP and where the racer heads to the strip every weekend and puts 5-10 passes on her. But then again, maybe we're all just extremely lucky..... :)
To reply to the orginal question in the post.... a ZZ4 shortblock is very close to a L98 90 shortblock, the ZZ4 has a couple of improvements, one is a slighlty lighter valvetrain, If I remember correctly its running titanium retainers which is typically good for around 5 hp or so, in addition it has a much improved cam vs the stock 90 L98.... thus probably adds roughly 20 hp.... maybe 30 hp. It retains 10-1 cr and runs the same aluminum D-port heads as the 90. Thus if you put the stock TPI on it, I would guess the ZZ4 would make roughly 280 flywheel HP, if you swapped in the Superram base manifold, runners and plenum in place of the stock TPI, I would guess HP would jump up to a solid 300 HP and maybe even as much as 320 HP depending on other modifications such as exhaust. If you swapped out the ZZ4 cam for a LPE 219 and did a thorough port & polish on the D-ports you could expect at least 375 hp and as much as 400-420 HP depending on all of the little things that you do. This much HP is good for low 12's with a manual transmission and with an auto with a good torque converter you can break into the 11's. The above #'s are all educated guestimates... but I'll bet they're pretty close.
wow seems low. My setup is dynoing in the low 300 for RWHP. Is this due to the transmission? I do not have a superram but I do have a ZZ4 Longblock with the Richmond 6 speed, which is supposed to be less parasitic horsepower loss then other transmissions..And my car runs in the high 12's at the track (although I have not done this, its a claim from Top Flight Corvette where the car was built) and that is lower then your ET.
