I've thought about using this system myself. Changed my mind after reading from others more knowledgeable then me said it isn't much good in the low RPM range. For $200 you can spend the money elsewhere to make more power. :chevy
Well, I bought one to try and fix a high rpm missfire(after checking EVERYTHING ELSE), put the coil which is supplied on first, that fixed the missfire about 6000 so I haven't gotten around to installing the rest of it, but I feel its a good system and it is digital which means it uses way less current than the MSD 6.
I don't have the misfire, but I can see the black smoke sometimes when I get in the higher RPM's. My exaust tips are well sooted-up too. That is the main reason I want the upgrade.
There comes a time when your plug makes more then enough spark for fuel to be properly and effieciently burned. I dont want to burst anyones bubble, but I think that the stock HEI systems prob make more then enuf spark to get the job done. Add some good platinum plugs and 8.8-9 MM wires and I dont think there is any appreciable HP diff when you add a higher power ignition over a stock HEI with the above plugs/wires. Course this may be my opinion!! I know on my 5.7 TA years ago I put in the MSD system that was the rage at the time and other then being a pain to install, it didnt do squat on the dyno or road.
Oh well what do I know anyways !!!
Good Luck with whatever you do, just keep Vettin !!
The black smoke you referred to earlier is the result of a rich condition. Unless you have a custom chip, the factory settings at WOT are set to a rich condition. You may want to investigate that area first.
I can understand the factory setting at WOT. But to have a carbon cloud is excessive(occurs mostly when engine is not up to temp). The car is stock with 16,000 miles, so there is little wear on parts. I want to upgrade the ignition to hopefully burn some of that extra gas. :)
If its not missing, more spark is not the problem, fuel is. Weak ignition is very noticeable in feel, real rich fuel is more visibly seen and not felt as much.
