I did some research, and it seems the most likely reason for my '84 not starting is the little splined shaft in the center of the starter needs to be replaced. I got a new one, but I don't know the first thing about switching 'em out. Anyone?
When I have starter issues I usually change the entire unit to a remanufactured starter and new solenoid. The only time I deviate is if I KNOW it's only the solenoid that's bad that happens when header heat kills it.
Although it's less expensive to just change a part, my thinking is if one part fails the others internals can't be far behind. Besides, jacking up the car, jack-stands, wrestling with the starter bolts and connections, changing out the failed part, then re-installation only to have to do it all over again a few months down the road is just too much work for me.
Of course there are young, limber guys who are cost conscious and who don't mind, but being over 60 changes your thinking. At least it did mine.
