Hard shift to first
Anyone experienced this? ALso, the manual says I don't need to change the tranny fluid. I would like to change out all fluids since I just bought it so I'll be able to mnitor conditions. Has anyone else changed the tranny fluid? Is there fluid up at the shifter?
Yes, you can change the tranny fluid. You will need a 17mm hex wrench and 3 qts of oil. The trans has a fill plug located on the side and a drain plug located on the bottom. Remove the fill plug first.
It doesn't seem likely that gear fluid is the problem (although possible) - but I'm guessin' synchros...
That's my
As for shifter linkage. There is only one non-adjustable shaft.
For trans oil. Some use the GM 5W30, some use BMW Castrol 10W60, Amsoil and a few other also make trans oil for our ZF6's. I'm currently running the BMW 10W60, but would like to try the Amsoil.

Try to keep the vette parked till you start work on the project. The noise you hear is the dog teeth on the synchros.....not good to use the car in this condition.....JMHO.
You probably have enough fluid in the system, but the seal on the slave piston and / or the seal in the clutch M/C is worn out and you loose hyd pressure....if you pump the clutch pedal sometimes you can work up enough to get the fork to move enough.....if you find that you are low on fluid, then you need to find the leak. Refill the M/C reservior in that case but plan on buying parts anyway. It's probably about $300.00 by now for the hose, slave & M/C and a pint of GM fluid.
This isn't a hard job but it's time consuming....alot of tight places that you have to work in is what makes it tedious. Bleeding the system will proly take longer than swapping out the parts. If you need a step by step on this post up and we can give you the low down on this repair.
