I have to replace my clogged cats and I contacted a guy that buys used cats to see what there worth. He said if there originals there worth about a $100 bucks. So I send him this picture and he says there aftermarkets, worth $15 bucks.I say the car has 76000 miles and I'm the 2nd owner and I think there the originals. Can anyone tell me from looking at the picture what they are?P.S. The wet spots is from the liquid wrench spray.
Chances are they are OEM. With 76K on the car, OEM pre-cats should have lasted at least that long if not longer.
I just removed the original front Y-pipe from my 87 and my assembly looks just like what's in your pic.
The metals in the cats may be worth something, but unless the guy is local and is willing to pick them up, I would not bother messing with him. It sounds like he is low-balling you on his offer. Unless he is very familiar with the early C4 OEM pre-cats, he has no real way of telling if they are original or aftermarket from a pic.
I had a single OEM cat on my 85 that I replaced two years ago. It was in bad shape..almost plugged. For the single cat I got $75.00 and that was TWO YEARS AGO. Try another vendor.
Those appear to be the OEM Pre-Cats used in the L-98 motors. The actual main cat is connected to the end of this exhaust piece also known as the front Y-Pipe. The front Y-pipe bolts to the exhaust manifolds comes down with a Pre-cat on each side, then merges into a single piece before it ends. The main cat connects to that peice, which leaves the rear exhaust section to attach to the rear of the main cat. The rear section splits the exhaust system back out into a dual exhaust setup and ends. Then finally each muffler attach on each end of the rear Y-pipe and are supported from the rear with exhaust hangers. These mufflers normally terminate at their end with some type of exhaust tip. So if your cat is clogged, you need to make sure that the main cat is what he is looking at, not just the pre-cats. Both the pre-cats and main cat can be clogged, just make sure that you know what the problem truly is. If he's trying to tell you that the pre-cats are clogged and charges you to replace the front Y-pipe and never looks at the main cat, you could be throwing good money to bad!
Hey thanks guys.I sent him this post and he admits he was wrong. He thinks the precats are worth $120.I pulled them off yesterday and the right side was starting to break up.I had a couple small chunks make it to the main cat.It looks like theres some residue in the main so it looks like I'll be replacing that too. Then I should be back to full power.Dino
If you are replacing everything, I would suggest you think about the front Y-pipe version that has no cats. If the main cat has to go, there are some high-flow cats that will install in the right spot and work better than stock and still help with emissions. There are versions with and without the AIR pump connection.
Thanks,I debated the no precats and decided to go with them.My luck with computerized cars is if you change something your going to be fighting the check engine light.
I have been debating replacing the y-pipe and getting rid of the precats.........Just out of curiosity, will the car pass an emissions test without the precats?
