For simply scanning codes save your money.
Bend a #1 paper clip into a "U", use it to jumper ALDL pins A & B (upper right), turn on the ignition and count SES flashes.

my friend has the GM code scanner, said it costed them about $100 i think. But its the same thing that you do when you jump the A&B pins so i wouldnt waste the money. Now getting a computer program for your laptop is still a good idea i think.
