I have 2.59 gears and am thinking about getting 2.73 or 3.07's, how much mpg will I lose with each?
I am thinking 1 mpg w/2.73 and 2-3 w/3.07, I have headers and a very mild cam.
PS. People who say they get 26+ mpg w/4.10 gears, please do not insult me by replying.
My 95A4 only gets 24 on the highway doing about 80 at 2500 rpm and only 15 on my slow daily commute with a 3.07, hot cam, lt headers & yank tc. Up until this point it's been a blast to drive every day but now it's getting down right expensive No doubt about it though the tc costs milage in the daily stop & go.
Ifn yer gonna use it for your daily driver stick with what you got. If it's only for the weekends, you will absolutely love the 3.07

For your needs,a 3.07 will be excellent. After you get used to it,you can see 25+ mpg on the highway depending on speeds.
With my former L98 stock with 3.07's,I saw 28-30 mpg with the stock automatic. That was keeping it under 65 mph though.25 mpg was a realistic number for most highway driving.
A looser torque converter may cause it to drop a little for auto guys.

Good question as I'm thinking about doing the same thing. Weekend car mostly. Seriously looking at 3.07's.
My stock 94 A4 with 3.07's was getting a solid 26mpg at 60mph. Around town and being nice, I would get 18mpg. A little better than my 2000 300m. With the 3.07's I was also able to get 1.9 60 footers on Good Year radial tires as well. Going from 2.59's to the 3.07's would be a good choice I think.

Makes sense......My '96 is about 1 1/2-2mpg above that. Both still very good MPG these days!

These "people" are driving 6spd's, big difference. I was able to get 26 mpg round trip to richmond va a few weeks ago and that included drag racing on sat. I have the stock 3.45 gears.

Sorry, I was talking about a4's, did not mean to insult the 6 speed owners.
My 1995 auto with 3.07 rear, 2800 stall, and mods below gets 22-24 mpg at 2k rpm's(70mph highway cruise control). It averages 16.1 mpg overall, verified on paper. I do mostly city driving with one 45 minute highway trip a week. I do have a heavy foot on the gas. I think the 3.07 gear would be perfect for a modified daily driver. If it was a track only car and could hook up without breaking I'd go for more gear.
I have a lot of mods including built 4L60 E and 373 Dana 44 rear gear.
The car is barely streetable but W/315x35 and the O/D I can cruze at 70 all day at 2500 with 13 MPG .
It see's only weekend drives but I'm planing a trip this summer 800 miles round trip if I can get a getup to beg for gas money at Interstate rest stops.
If you regear a street driven car be sure to add a good trans cooler as an investment in longivity.
Do a little math. Your 2.59 in "D" may be pretty close to a 3.07/3.42/or 3.73 in OD. I don't remember the OD ratios, but I'm guessing someone on the board does. I have vettes with the 2.59 and the 3.07. The 2.59 is a dog comparitively. Mileage isn't a huge amount different. Looking for max MPG....leave it alone. Looking for max smiles...swap it out. It can't be more than an MPG or two difference. Probably closer to 1.

I'm averaging around 16 mpg (16.7 on last tank), but I have 3.45s in my 1995 A4 with a 2800 stall and mods. I spend my highway time trying to stay at 79 mph and I drive spiritedly in town. So it looks like there is not much difference between 3.45s and 3.07s.
Now when I swapped from 2.59s to 3.45s my around town mileage actually improved and the highway mileage dropped a mpg or so but my engine was stock back then and pressing the go pedal didn't have as much affect on the accelaration as it does now.
