Default Do i have a Bad VSS ?

Hi there,

I am new to C4s ( I own a C5 also ) and couldn't be happier. I found my new 92 LT1 being treated very badly so I had to adopt her. Car is in OK condition mechanically bar some issues here and there. I'm hoping to restore her to tip top shape slowly. The first thing i want to tackle is the odometer. Its stuck at its current position . The Speedo is stuck at zero too. it does change from time to time but goes back to zero . Does this mean that i need to change the VSS ? Also would that cure my frozen ODO ?

Thanks

Are you saying that neither the odometer and speedometer changes when you are driving the car? Does the odometer stay on the current mileage? Does the Speedometer show anything on the DIC?

I believe that both are controlled by the CCM but I'm not sure what sensors are used to update the speedometer.

I believe there is a gear on the tailshaft of the tranny that spins the vss,My speedometer stays at 0 for the first mile or so than starts working, I'm thinking the heat or friction causes it to finally catch and drive the vss for a reading. Hope this info. helpes.

yep . The ODO is fixed on the current mileage. While driving the Speedometer comes to life then dies again and reads 0 .

Default VSS Speedo Problem

The VSS is mechanically coupled to the transmission by two gears, one on the transmission output shaft and the other connected to the VSS. If your car has been extremely abused and either of these two gears have been damaged (they are only plastic) your VSS will not turn and no signal will be sent. No signal from a bad VSS sensor can also cause your problem. Thirdly the wiring from the VSS is routed along the transmission and into the engine compartment. If any of that wire has chaffed because of the noted abuse you could be shorting your signal to ground. Fourthly there can be many more issues that cause your problem including a bad gauge. Your best bet if you want to fix it yourself is invest in a set of FSMs (if you haven't already done so) and start reading about the speedometer system and follow the troubleshooting procedures. Because your problem can be quite omplex there is no simple answer, and that is why you haven't been given one. And yes there is Love here in the C4 section.

One other thing you might check is that the correct VSS is installed. I had the same problem with my 91 and with the help of this forum link:

http://www.corvetteforum.net/c4/vett...Gearshtm.shtml

I discovered mine was wrong. I had a 10456092 "black" drive head VSS installed and I needed a 10456091 "white" drive head.

The different part number VSSs transmit pulses at different frequencies.

Once the correct p/n was installed, speedo, odometer and cruise came back to life.....
