Default Doh!

I'm putting on a new intake and just installed my intake gasket. After I finished torquing everything down, I reviewed my manual which said I should have put RTV around the coolant passages of the gasket. Well crap!

Should I go ahead and pull it back apart and do this? Also, manual said to torque to 35' lbs...is that correct? This is not the FSM but a book from the local parts store. Thanks for the help!

I have changed mine twice and have never done that. I never had a leakage.

I have an LT4 which may be different, but I've never done that. As long as you put RTV along the front and rear of the engine, where there is no gasket, you should be fine.

Glad to hear it should be okay. Yes I did put the RTV on the front and back walls of the block. Thanks for the help!

Does the FSM call for 35' lbs of torque? It just didn't seem like very much.

They are different LT1/4 have dry intakes. The L98 intake has coolant passages (as do most of the other SBC engines).

There isn't much load on the intake, the only real reason to torque it is to get even pressure on the gaskets. The bolts also go into the heads which are aluminum.

I have stopped checking torque on things seated in aluminum components as I have stripped far too many holes. I use antiseize or rtv on the bolts and have developed a "feel" for whats ok with aluminum. If you already did 35 foot pounds I would fire it up and check for coolant and vacuum leaks, if your getting them, tighten a little. Don't over do it.

I was reading lookin' at that very picture of the RTV'ed gasket, last night in my Haynes book. I was lookin' for somethin' else, and the whole section was for L98, not LT1.

I would probably get some RTV onto the gasket. L98 has serious problems with flex in the intake parts - TB, plenum, runners, and intake. Don't invite trouble.

Take your time; do it right. I'm over 50 hours easy in my gasket swap, parts cleanin', countin' time takin' pics, and postin' time too.

Really...that's interesting. Is that from the FSM?

Dave, I would fire it up if I can get my SR on. I might be calling on the NCCO's help this week!
