Default 1.6R tip rocker HELP

Posted earlier and I have a little vibration in my valve covers. When I placed the covers on without gaskets I got no vibration but when I put them on with the gaskets I'm now feeling some vibration. I haven't removed the tabs but it looks like I'm going to need to.

The issue I'm worried about is I am getting some smoking from my new valve cover gaskets. They are Mr. Gasket and I was wondering if it's normal to get a little smoke from new gaskets.

Please let me know if it's normal to get smoke from gaskets to see if I need to get some new ones tomorrow before I remove the tabs and re-assemble.

Thanks,
Merritt

Cut off the drip tabs, do not try to break or snap them off. To do so may break out the cover (put a hole in it). When you were switching the RR's you may have got a small amount of oil on the exhaust. You really don't notice it until you start it up. It will smoke from the exhaust manifold until it burns off. It may also be some gasket material from the covers that fell down onto or between the exhaust manifold when you pulled them off.

Be sure that you have a clean surface for the valve cover gaskets to mate against. If you use a sealant, the metal must be clean and dry. Wipe it off with lacquer thinner.

I had to grind down the drip tabs as well as narrow the bolt towers to avoid interference with the ProMagnums.

Thanks and getting oil down on the exhaust manifold or in the exhaust side of the valves makes sense. I didn't trim the tabs because I have the old style valve covers and the tabs are so small I didn't think it would be an issue. They wouldn't be hitting where I have the PCV valve would they?

I guess I'll dremel them off tonight and see if that fixes the issue. If not it's time for some cheap valve covers as the wife is noticing the money in parts leaving

Thanks,
Merritt

Trim the tabs. I am still using the original covers from my 85. I do use a taller VC gasket, the Felpro 1604 which is 5/16 inch thick. I did have to go to longer bolts. With the stock cam for the 85 (same cam for 86) I was lifting the exhaust with 1.6 RR to a height of .442" without problems using the taller gasket and trimmed tabs.
