Default AC leak?

I have a wierd issue on the 94...I replaced my brake booster, shortly after that I had a weird smell in the cabin.(brakes work great) I noticed after the car would sit in the sun a weird film would be on the windsheild around the bottom. not moisture, It would wipe off clean, but came back the next day....
there is no coolant leaking in the cabin dry as a bone! and no coolant loss. the weird smell does not smell like coolant..more like old cardboard for lack of a better words...I never smelled this odor before.
I just tried my ac and.... low on refrigerant (as everything in the system seems to work fine) not cooling like she used too (used to freeze you out even here in the desert!) so I figure evaporator core huh?. I know what R12 smells like, never smelled R134. there are no codes stored in the control head. what do you guys think? Evap core? if so how hard is it to replace? any suggestions as to anything else it could be. I have been turning the wrench on this car but never ac work before. I searched the forum for 3 days no luck... any help would be great!

Go to an a/c shop and have them stick an electronic leak detector in your vents. Usually it's free as it takes all of a couple of seconds and if the Evaporator is leaking, they want the Big $'s to fix it - probably around $500 - $600 since the core is $200 or so and it will need an Accumulator plus gas and oil. Otherwise, replacing it is removing everything/anything in the way - the right head helps but isn't necessary. I'd least remove the passenger fender, anything between it and the housing, maybe the tire and jack it up so that you can access the lower case bolts. Make sure it get's sealed back up so that your cool air doesn't flow into the engine compartment. Clean the orifice (inside the inlet or bottom tube bottom) or replace it. Also replace the Accumulator.
