Help - Oil pump question

I am in the process of replacing my oil pump. I have the old one removed and the new one ready to install. However, I need to remove the oil pump shaft from the old one and transfer it to the new pump. I first need to remove the "retainer" to transfer the oil pump shaft. The Helms, Haynes and Chilton manuals all indicate that this needs to be done, but none go into any detail on how to remove the retainer. It looks like it is pressed on, but before I go pulling on it and break something, I was hoping to get some advice from someone who has done this before.
