Default asking before i do it

i found a local exhaust shop that will remove my stock 24 year old converter and replace it with pipe, when i first bought the car the mufflers rotted and fell off the car (aftermarket kit)

now my question is other then being loud will the car run alright with that straight of a exhaust or should i put maybe a xpipe where the converter was?

could it possibly sound good straight piped or will it be a police target

right now with the mufflers off of it you can barely hear the car

Well, you can run straight pipes from the manifold back to mufflers but you will probably end up wanting an x-pipe. An x-pipe will balance out the exhaust waves going through each pipe resulting in more HP than straight out the back. It will be a tad quieter with and x-pipe because you will be hearing all 8 cylinders instead of two seperate 4 cylinders. My advise, throw an x-pipe in there and install it as close to the back as possible (before it splits to the mufflers). And as for mufflers, you would want them. I went with Hooker Aero Chambers. Sounds great.

My advice coming from an owner who has dual exhaust (they dont connect). Go with the X pipe as it will help with back pressure. At low rpm mine doesnt run very smooth because of the straight pipes.

I think the level of engine mods done affects how the car runs with true duals. I've done alot, and the car runs great with the dual 3" system I had fabbed up.

With that said, an xpipe is a good choice. Hansel87 hit it on the nose, better sound, quieter, and a little more backpressure to be on the safe side. I've had friends that went to true dual on normal trucks, and they stall out now at stoplights.

I'm running duals with an old school H-pipe I had the muffler shop make up back to stock mufflers. Thing has a nice low rumble to it and it's overly loud. Compared to my sister-in-law's b/f which has a 5.0 Mustang with cats and flowmaster 40's I'm MUCH quieter than he is. I felt a def. improvement over stock but I also had my pre-cats removed as well as my main cat.

You will be happy with an x-pipe especially if you remove the pre-cats if you have them as I did on my 86E
